When Should I See a Doctor?

Guidelines for Seeing a Physician

If any of these conditions apply to you, see an otolaryngologist (or ENT doctor):

  • If your hoarseness or voice difficulty lasts greater than 2-3 weeks
  • If your hoarseness lasts a short time but keeps re-occurring
  • If you have a vocal performance engagement and need immediate attention
  • If you have pain with swallowing or speaking and have a history of smoking

However, if you have any questions about whether you need to see a doctor, please give us a call at the Duke Voice Care Center at 681-4984. We will be happy to assist you.
