Your visit will be tailored to your specific needs. With most voice and/or swallowing difficulties, it is typical to see both an otolaryngologist (otolaryngologist or ENT physician/surgeon) and a speech pathologist (trained specifically in care of the voice). A singing voice specialist will also evaluate anyone with singing voice changes.
The DVCC Team:
Our primary voice team includes a highly specialized group of laryngologists, speech pathologists, and a singing voice specialist.
- Otolaryngologist/Laryngologist – A physician who specializes in evaluating and treating conditions of the ear, nose, and throat. All DVCC physicians have specialized training in the medical and surgical management of the voice and swallowing mechanism.
- Speech Pathologist – A clinician with a Master’s degree in Speech Pathology. Within the DVCC, all speech pathologists have specialized training in the evaluation and rehabilitation of voice and swallowing disorders.
- Singing voice specialist – A speech pathologist who has extensive background in singing and vocal pedagogy (teaching singing) or a singing teacher with extensive training in voice disorders and voice rehabilitation. The singing voice specialist helps determine the role of performing in the vocal injury and provides rehabilitatitive therapy for the special needs of the performing voice. The singing voice specialist often advocates for the patient with artistic personnel regarding a particular performance and helps with vocal pacing and making scheduling decisions.
- a medical examination will be completed for the head and neck, including, when appropriate, visualization of the vocal cords, nasal passages, and sinuses.
- a voice evaluation which examines technique for speaking and/or singing, voice measures (acoustic assessment), and videolaryngostroboscopy (a slow motion evaluation of the vocal folds.
